Summer is around the corner which means it’s time for some fun road trips! No need worry, mama, I’m here to share some helpful tips for a road trip with a toddler. With a husband who’s job requires him to travel often, I’ve had my fair share of road trips, both long and short with an infant and a toddler. Surprisingly, they haven’t been bad. Sure, they get cranky here and there, but as adults so do we!
Here are some helpful tips for a road trip with a toddler
Pack snacks and water
Pack a spill-proof sippy cup and cut up some fresh fruit the night before.
Pack activity books and comfort toy
Get a basket and fill it up with coloring books, books, crayons, favorite toys, and have it next to toddler’s carseat.
Play “I Spy”
If you’re little one starts getting cranky, nothing but a good game of “I Spy” to make things better. If there isn’t anything to “spy” simply point out things that are inside the car. Sippy cup, shirt, shoes, toys, books, or anything that is easy for your toddler to see.
Have singing contests
Don’t be shy, mama, bust out some of your singing skills, or the singing skills you think you have. Because deep down we can all sing, right? Take turns singing nursery rhymes or songs you know your child likes. It will put the biggest smile on your toddler’s face. Have the entire family sing and take turns being the judge. Both my kids, 4 and 1, LOVE to play this, my one year old will even dance and sing along.
Pack a trash bag
This will make cleaning your car so much easier.
Take breaks
Don’t stress over frequent potty breaks, this will happen and it’s good! It’ll give your toddler a chance to stretch their legs and walk a little bit. Let your toddler get down and pick a few snacks while dad fills up the gas tank.
Don’t forget the air freshener
Make sure to ALWAYS travel with an air freshener, especially when it comes to road trips! This is usually my husband’s thing, he actually enjoys shopping for air fresheners and has our kids help him choose the scent. Thankfully, Refresh Your Car air fresheners are affordable and come in a variety of fragrances that help with car odor. My daughter loves Wildflowers & Love vent stick, it provides a long-lasting refreshing scent, not an overwhelming scent at all. Easy to insert into a vent and enjoy the freshness of a good smelling car!
