Now that my little one has entered toddlerhood, I had to switch out my big diaper bag for something much smaller.  Remember that your child is growing, so it’s important to accommodate to his needs.  I usually have my diaper bag stocked and ready to go (for the exception of snacks and sippy cup).  If I notice I am running low on something like wipes, I quickly restock.  I ran out of wipes one time, never doing that again!  Also, I hate rushing, it’s much easier for me to have everything organized and ready.  Here is a list of essentials every toddler mom should keep in her diaper bag to help things run more smoothly.

Diaper Bag Essentials For Toddlers

  1. Diapers and wipes.  I have not started potty training yet, so I always make sure to have a small stack of diapers and wipes packed.  If your toddler is potty-trained, substitute diapers for an extra pair of underwear.  Wipes will always be a necessity, great for cleaning up messes!
  2. Changing pad.  Most diaper bags come with waterproof changing pads.  This portable changing pad clutch is perfect for travel.
  3. Snacks.  It is important to have a few snacks on hand.  For some reason, my little ones always get hungry (even if they just ate) when we are out running errands.  I like to use Dr. Brown’s reusable snack bags, they’re easy to open and come in a variety of sizes.  The snack bags stay upright when full, which means you don’t have to worry about messes if your toddler places the bag down.  Cleaning the snacks bags is easy, they’re dishwasher safe!  These Dr. Brown’s snack cups are also great for on the go.  They are spill-proof cups that keep snacks fresh and secure.  I usually like to pack cut grapes, blueberries, sliced apples, and crackers.
  4. Sippy cup.  Always travel with water, no matter if you plan to be out for thirty minutes or three hours.  Trust me, this is a necessity.  Dr. Brown’s straw cup is my favorite sippy cup for on the go.  It’s spill-proof and the lid locks to keep straw clean.  If your child prefers soft spout cups, these Dr. Brown’s cups are great for travel as well.
  5. Sunscreen.  It is crucial for your toddler to wear sunscreen all year round.  In fact, UV rays penetrate clouds and reflect off sand, water, snow, and concrete.
  6. Diaper rash cream.  Just in case you need it, you never know when you need to treat a diaper rash.
  7. Tissues.  Strong, yet gentle on little noses.
  8. Hand sanitizer.  Keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer in your diaper bag to keep your child’s hands clean.  This is also great to clean surfaces your child touches.
  9. Favorite toy.  My toddler is currently obsessed with cars.  I try to rotate toys, this way he doesn’t get bored of the same ones.
  10. Extra clothes.  This is the age your child is recognizing that he is capable of doing things himself.  Encourage independence and embrace the messes!
